Any new technology?Perhaps not on the technology front, but there are some quirky little innovations on the No 3, not least the off-kilter diagonal roof pillar running across the panoramic glass panel. The five-seater has a high driving position and a one-box shape, but aims to combine genuine sportiness with cute proportions and tardis-like interior space. At present we don't know anything other than how great Kia thinks it looks. We agree, but some engine and drivetrain info would have been nice. Will it ever see the light of day?The roof means drivers will see plenty of light, that's for sure, and there's every chance it will indeed see the light of Kia's ever more stylish showrooms. The biggest clue to Kia's production intention actually lies in the name: according to the maker, the name 'is related to the production car's position in the future Kia model line-up.' So, not a clue so much as a direct confirmation then.Mark Nichol Buzz up! Kia's new MPV show car bears an uncanny resemblance to the new Ford Fiesta and these are the first full official images. The Kia No.3 (yes, it's a strange name too!) was designed in Europe under the watch of ex-Audi styling chief Peter Schreyer – and he's revealed that this is the new face of Kia. So check that front grille, headlamps and brand logo 'in new constellation format', as this is bound for every future Kia model. At the Geneva show 2008, Schreyer told us that he was working on a new family face, even revealing that it was to be inspired by the facial features of a tiger. Which might explain the ruched, tiger-stripe interior seating. Grrr.Kia No.3: the basicsThe No.3 measures 4045mm long, placing it in the mini-MPV segment. See this as Kia's answer to the C3 Picasso and Renault Modus, and we hear that this is one concept car bound for showroom almost totally unchanged. One thing that is likely to be watered down, however, is that complex glass roof. No.3 sports an extended glass windscreen/panoramic glass top, with a diagonal supporting bar and an automatic sun visor. Expect the real thing to stick with a good, old-fashioned metal lid.>> Click here for CAR's guide to all the new cars at the 2009 Geneva motor show 1 Rate this article... 1 2 3 4 5 Average rating: 2.5 (9 votes) Discuss this Add your comment Sign in You must be signed in to submit a comment. After a long line of catastrophically cars from Asia, Kia finally realised that No.1 or No.2 might have other conotations! 27 February 2009 14:13 Johann says RE: Kia No.3 concept MPV: first photos I stand corrected (as someone on another Forum pointed out to me): "Peter Schreyer was responsible for the original TT (and was design director at the time of the A2) but the A2 is actually credited to Luc Donckerwolke (went on to Lamborghini then Seat) and Derek Jenkins (now at VW America). They won an Autocar "Designer of the year Award" in 2001 for the A2." 26 February 2009 11:50 Vilagos says RE: Kia No.3 concept MPV: first photos Wow, KIA has the amazingly Opel like i20 (down to the steering wheel design) and now the amazingly Ford like No.3 ... guess we don't have to worry if the Big Three go under, the Koreans will keep building from their portfolio long after they are gone! 25 February 2009 16:56 Johann says RE: Kia No.3 concept MPV: first photos Peter Schreyer is indeed the designer of the original Audi A2. Hence this car looking so much like it I guess... He has been quoted as saying he thinks the A2 was his favourite design of everything he'd done at Audi. 25 February 2009 12:59 kkirkou says RE: Kia No.3 concept MPV: first photos Oh, and remember this is all being done with Hyundai money and supervision. I think KIA was extremely lucky not to be acquired by Ford back in 1998. It would probably be closed right now or given away for peanuts. 25 February 2009 06:13 Show all comments Become a CAR contributor Upload stories, photos or videos direct to the site, or email newsdesk@carmagazine.co.uk. Because if it rings any bells for anyone at all, it will probably be one of warning. The old Sorento was the kind of beast only its mother would love: a slow, ugly, uncomfortable, hulking off-roader you bought because it represented probably the cheapest way of towing 3.5 tonnes there was. By the starkest of contrasts, this new Sorento is a thoroughly modern seven-seat SUV styled in a chi-chi California design studio to appeal to those who care as much about how they look as where they go. Kia is quite explicit about the price paid for this approach – it openly admits the new Sorento is nothing like as capable off road as the previous one and that towing capacity has been cut by an entire tonne in manual form– but claims that it has been able to design a car that will appeal to a much broader audience. On the surface at least, it would appear that Kia has succeeded in this aim. Whether the car underneath those slick surfaces genuinely breaks new ground for the brand is what we are here to find out. The Sorento is available with petrol or diesel power with prices rising through four equipment grades from £20,495 to a steep-sounding £29,795. But the entry-level car is only available with five seats, front drive and petrol power – a combination not even Kia reckons is going to find many buyers. You need to spend another two grand to buy the same car with a diesel motor and three rows of seats. Another thousand pounds buys four-wheel drive. Our test car is the flagship KX-3 model, available only with an automatic transmission and priced just £205 short of £30,000.
