Steve Ghosley takes a look at the CRDi diesel version It probably won't come as a shock to many of you that a good proportion of readers will have switched off already. They'll have seen the word `Kia' at the top of the page and moved on, figuring that buying a Kia was akin to shopping at Iceland or booking a holiday to Faliraki; not something that discerning, quality conscious buyers would do. The trouble with looking to badges as exemplars of brand equity is that badges stay the same but products change, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Mercedes traded on its badge for a long time in the nineties, turning out some surprisingly second-rate products they were able to charge big premiums for, solely on the strength of the perceived cachet of the three-pointed star. Just as Mercedes buyers were not quite getting what they expected, so the casual bargain seeker may well do the same, lucking into something quite beyond the normal if they buy a Kia cee'd. Yes, the name is awful, cee'd coming from `Community Europe and Europe Design'. The Community of Europe is usually signified as CEE but no one at Kia could say what the other `e' stood for. Therefore Kia was left with three e's and hence the apostrophe. Three diesel engines are offered, the first two based around the same 1.6-litre direct injection common-rail 16v architecture. Choose either the 90bhp version or the more satisfying 115bhp variant. Both are more relaxing to drive than the breathy petrol units. If you need additional muscle, the 2.0-litre CRDi engine has 138bhp at its disposal. The steering lacks a little of the polish of some of the very best contenders, although we're talking about tiny percentage differences. There's certainly very little in it when it comes to ride quality, the Kia adopting much the same MacPherson strut front suspension and five-link independent rear setup as the best of its rivals. The cee'd corners well with well-suppressed lateral roll and even when provoked, steadfastly refuses to do anything unexpected. The long wheelbase helps ride quality with only lumpy B-roads showing up any flaws in deportment. Performance is fair, the 90bhp 1.6-litre unit getting to 60mph in 13.5 seconds and the 115bhp model 11.2 seconds, the respective top speeds being 106 and 116mph. The 2.0-litre takes 10.3s to do the 0-60mph sprint and will reach 127mph. "This Kia is a good car, full stop" The cee'd is a car designed by Europeans for Europeans. It's built in Europe - in Slovenia to be exact - and the man behind the design project, Peter Schreyer, was once head of design for Volkswagen Group. The Koreans are pulling no punches and that much is evident the very first time you clap eyes on a cee'd. I challenge you to name one Korean car to date that hasn't had at least one gratuitously odd styling feature. Think of even the better-looking South-East Asian cars and there will be some jarring detail you'll be able to nominate fairly easily. With the cee'd, Kia has aimed for a more mature design. Not mature as in the demographic of the target market. Rather the design output of a company that doesn't need to fall back on gimmickry and ostentation to get noticed. Sit inside the cee'd and you'll wonder whether they might be on the way to achieving it. Schreyer and his team benchmarked the best European cars in order to give Kia something substantive to aim at and when it came to interiors, he was able to share a little of what he knew of his ex-employers' best practice. Quality fabrics, doors that `thunk' shut and thoughtful approach to design make the cee'd a landmark Korean car. There are still some improvements that need to be made. The plastics quality is still a little hit and miss and the orange dash lighting isn't overly easy on the eye but let's not be patronising and proclaim the car as `a lot of metal for your money' or any other such bunk. This Kia is a good car, full stop. Up against the likes of the Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Astra, the cee'd needs to be extravagantly talented to even have a sniff of getting near Kia's modest target of two percent of total segment sales which, in real terms, equates to about 10,000 cars per year. Three-door and estate models will help those figures but it's still a stretching aspiration. Pricing that start at around £12,500 for the 90bhp CRDi S is obviously going to help, and the GS model only weighs in at around £500 more. The 115bhp LS is pitched at around £14,500 and the 2.0 CRDi Sport is another £1,000. These prices tend to be around £1,000 less per model than something like a Focus. The SW estate bodystyle commands a £800 premium model for model. Equipment levels are noteworthy, the entry-level car getting air-conditioning, an MP3-compatible CD stereo, front seats with height and lumbar adjustment to complement a rake and reach adjustable steering column, electric front windows and six airbags. Highlights of the GS model include 16-inch alloys, heated and electrically-adjustable door mirrors, remote central locking and a stereo with USB and auxiliary inputs. The LS gets half-leather trim, climate control, electric rear windows and front fog lights amongst its list of toys while the Sport takes a slightly sportier tack with 17-inch rims, sports seats and black bezel headlamps. There are no problems when it comes to fuel economy with any of the CRDi diesel engines, the 90bhp model returning an average figure of 60.1mpg and the 115bhp version matching that figure to the tenth. Emissions are also quoted as the same for each 1.6-litre powerplant, the stated figure being 125g/km. The only blot on the copybook in this regard is the lack of a diesel particulate filter. The 2.0-litre CRDi engine can return 50.4mpg on the combined cycle with 148g/km emissions. Used values will doubtless be propped up quite nicely by Kia's excellent warranty arrangement. Buyers get full cover for seven-years or 100,000 miles. It's about as good as the industry can offer and puts mainstream rivals like Ford and Vauxhall in the shade. This promise of trouble free motoring will be enough to tip the balance for many potential customers. Insurance ratings also look very reasonable, predicated upon a low cost of repair, a generally mature buyer profile and excellent safety provision. Choosing a Kia cee'd CRDi diesel is a bold decision. There will be those who choose rationally, noting that the pence per mile figures, the warranty details and the interior dimensions all mark the cee'd down as one of the best cars in its class. Then there will be a rarer breed of customer, those who chance upon the car and like it because of the more intangible criteria. They'll like the way the car feels extremely well bolted together, they'll like the supple ride and the hunkered down shape. The banner price that drew them to the car in the first place becomes a secondary concern. Of the three engines offered, the 2.0-litre version is more fun to drive, but Kia has been rather greedy, making this model available only in the top Sport trim level. If they could offer a lower spec version with the higher power engine it would get a solid five star recommendation but as it stands, four nevertheless represents a big thumbs up for the cee'd CRDi. Is This A Smart Move? Steve Ghosley Checks It Out… The last Kia Rio promised much but didn't really deliver and consequently wasn't the runaway success its manufacturer had expected. So, it was with little expectation that I got behind the wheel of Kia's latest Rio fitted with a 1.5-litre common-rail diesel engine. Despite my initial resigned apathy towards the car, it very soon grabbed my attention. The engine is surprisingly good. It has bags of pulling power, delivered from way down the rev-range in a smooth and progressive manner. It handled well and the manual five-speed gearbox, the only option currently available with the diesel engine models, was easy, if not exactly precise, to use. Suddenly it began to dawn on me that the car I was driving had more about it than I had initially expected. One of the key problems of the old car was that from a styling perspective, it didn't seem to know quite what it wanted to be. It seemed to hover somewhere between a hatch and an estate, but the latest car sharpens up the styling quite significantly. In fact, it's almost what you could call good looking, with a smart new family face. Everything about this car has been redesigned. That styling, for example, should go down well, featuring as it does a bolder nose, a more dynamic profile and a neater interior. Comfort-wise, there's more headroom, legroom and shoulder room, especially in the rear. The Kia Rio 1.5 CRDi features much stronger refinement than Kia have been able to offer in the past, courtesy of sleeker aerodynamics, a stronger structure and greatly enhanced NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) measures. The 1.5-litre turbocharged common-rail diesel is a difficult choice to ignore. This Rio will sprint from rest to 62mph in a very sprightly 11.5 seconds and charge on to a top speed of 110mph where the traffic conditions allow. Despite this impressive performance, the Rio diesel still beats Euro-IV emissions criteria, producing just 121g/m of CO2, and with a combined economy figure of 60.1mpg, it is certainly a hard one to resist. Performance of the 110PS 1.5-litre diesel unit is highly competitive and class-leading in an area of the market where most rivals have 75 PS or less. The 16-valve engine delivers 235 Nm of torque at just 2,000 rpm, so it makes for very relaxed driving with minimal use of the gearbox. "Kia are starting to put together a range of cars that can compete on equal terms with the established players" Some things never change though. The Rio 5-door hatch still revels in its shameless affordability, with prices starting at £9,045 for the GS model, which includes central locking, air-conditioning, electric front windows, power-assisted steering, ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution and twin front airbags as part of its standard specification. This impressive list is only spoilt by, what appears to be, an `after market' radio/CD player. The only other trim level - LS, adds 15-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured door handles and mirrors, front fog lights, rear electric windows, side and curtain airbags, active head restraints and remote central locking with perimeter alarm. There's also an optional Dynamic pack that includes a rear spoiler, sunroof and an Electronic Stability Program for additional safety. The 3,990 mm long new Rio hatchback is taller (+50 mm), wider (+15 mm) but shorter (-250 mm) than the model it replaces. The car also has a much longer wheelbase (+90 mm) which, combined with careful packaging of the mechanical components, enables it to claim `best-in-class' interior space for maximum occupant comfort. The Rio's wheelbase is between 9 mm and 40 mm longer than rivals like Volkswagen's Polo, and Ford's Fiesta, while its overall width is from 12 mm to 49 mm wider. The overall length is between 30 mm and 168 mm longer than those potential supermini rivals. This Rio is a surprisingly tight-feeling package on the road, with a reasonably taut suspension set up that keeps body roll well in check. Whereas the old car was pretty entertaining but somewhat crashy, the latest model's revised suspension geometry offers a little more refinement over ruts and potholes without sacrificing the fun factor. Indeed, the Rio diesel is a good sport to hustle about, the rack and pinion steering is light and accurate; something that has defeated the best efforts of many more prestigious manufacturers. Kia have taken the industry by surprise by charging the same money for this Rio 1.5 CRDi diesel as an equivalent 1.4-litre petrol model with the same trim level. They argue that it made no sense to charge cost-conscious buyers a premium for buying a diesel-powered car. It will be interesting to see if this enterprising view is subsequently shared by other manufacturers in their pricing structures. So, by the end of my drive I was quite taken by this little car. The engine is superb and certainly up there with the class leading diesels in its sector. Kia are starting to put together a range of cars that can compete on equal terms with the established players. This is by far the best car they have produced and with prices set to ruffle a few corporate feathers, the Kia Rio CRDi could be one to watch…. It’s a B-segment offering from Kia, a model the Korean firm hope will help build on the Ceed ’s success while attracting a younger audience. Think of it as our Mini or Fiat 500 , say the Kia people. The Kia Soul looks good to me... Certainly does. Thank ex-Audi designer Peter Schreyer for that. The Soul’s bold creases, chunky wheelarches and slabby sides lend it a sense of solidity while the blacked-out A-pillars and wing vents add a mini-me Range Rover feel. It doesn’t just look sturdy, though; slam the doors and it sounds quality too, a chunky thunk emanating rather than the kind of tinniness you might expect from a Korean product. How about inside the Soul? It can’t quite live up to the quality promised by the exterior and it’s off the pace when compared with European competitors like the new Ford Fiesta , but it’s not bad. In fact, as a whole it looks pretty good: clearly laid out controls, durable feeling fabric on the comfy (though unsupportive) seats and a tough-looking honeycomb design that covers the dash. There’s even standard air-con and the option of an eight-speaker stereo (developed in-house) to please the funky urban types that Kia hope to attract – which sounds good. But look at the parts that make up the whole and the façade falters – some of the lower plastics look cheap and scratch-prone while the door handles and electric window switches and surround look dated. All top-spec models (possibly tagged Extreme and thought to account for around a fifth of sales) get a colour-coded dash with the upper sections of the front and rear seats coloured to match. It probably looks good on subtler hues, but our red test car was a tad too garish – a bit explosion in a Dulux factory for our tastes. There are other options too: leather might be offered, but is not yet confirmed, while a range of so-called ‘character’ cars will be run for limited amounts of time. ‘Some might be more chic, others bling, girly or outdoorsy,’ said a spokesman. Before i bought it i took it round to my daughters and can easily get her large mothercare pushchair in the boot. Have yet to try a suitcase. Must admit to being disappointed at the interior materials used though! Kia have done a superb job at moving up from the the 'cheap & cheerful' car maker category but unless they improve the interior quality do not belive the Soul will do them any favours and will certainly put off their new 'young' market target. clientele. Also, they need to focus on the interior, it is after all where most of our time is spent in cars. No brand kudos means you need to have a better ambience and quality than expected inside so people are constantly reminded how good their choice was.
