Power Operated Doors For a start there are the rear doors and tailgate – they are all power operated. Then there’s the third row of seats which fold flat into the floor. Even with the seats up there’s plenty of room for luggage behind them, especially since there’s access to the recesses they occupy when stowed away. With the rear seats folded away there is a huge space, and there are still five seats available. Three Rows of Seats The third row can seat three at a pinch, making for a total of eight seating positions, but since the centre position is lap belt only from a safety perspective it can’t be recommended as anything but an occasional seating position. Of course the middle seats fold up as well, and owners take them out and swap them around if required. The driver’s seat is power adjustable, using a door mounted switch identical in shape to the one Mercedes put in their cars, while the LTD gets full leather interior. Rear Seat Air conditioning To keep an eye on back seat passengers an extra rear view mirror folds down out of the roof and to keep the rear cool there’s a separate ventilation system for the back. About the only family friendly thing the Carnival does not have is a DVD system, but it should be on the options list. There is an Infinity MP3 capable sound system which is particularly impressive. Safety Features The Kia Carnival LTD also has ABS and EBS and a reverse warning system, along with a full complement of six airbags, including curtain bags. The petrol Carnival has been around for a while, but the diesel one has proven so popular that it’s sold out until early 2010. Read on 2010 Kia Soul Review 2011 Kia Forte Koup Review Kia Cee'd SW Diesel Engine While not available in the US, the diesel is a 2.9-litre unit which produces a healthy 134kW/343Nm, running through a five speed automatic gearbox but while it’s a good engine there’s something very wrong with the accelerator. A push on the accelerator is met with a leisurely response, and then the vehicle goes from hardly accelerating at all to rapidly gaining speed as the turbo spools up and a large amount of torque is produced. It’s a real disappointment that such a good family car has such a flaw, because in all other respects there’s no reason for anyone shopping for a large MPV to avoid the Kia Carnival. Several structures in the dashboard presented a hazard to the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger. The brake pedal moved rearward by more than 100mm, posing some threat to the driver's lower legs and ankles.Side impactThe Carnival/Sedona scored full points for its performance in the side impact and pole tests.Child occupantThe passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing child restraint to be used. However, information provided to the driver about the status of the airbag is not sufficiently clear. The label warning against the use of a rearward facing child restraint in that seating position was only on one side of the sun visor and could not be seen with the visor stowed. The presence of ISOFIX anchorages in the rear outboard seats was not clearly indicated.PedestrianThe bumper and the front edge of the bonnet scored no points for the protection they offered to pedestrians' legs. The part of the bonnet likely to be struck by a child's head also offered no protection. The protection offered by the bonnet to an adult's head was predominantly poor.
