Electric Kia POP concept to spark interest at Paris Kia Motors will continue its tradition of unveiling convention-challenging and design-led concept vehicles at motor shows when it reveals an all-new electric concept car at the Paris Motor Show on the 30th September. Called the 'POP', Kia's latest concept car boasts zero-emissions - whilst in use - and at three metres long, yet with a three seat layout, brings innovative design chic and dramatic styling to the city car segment. Further information will be released in due course. The 2010 Paris Motor Show runs from the 30th September to the 17th October. Kia Motors is to unveil a dramatic 2+2 sports coupe concept - the work of Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer - at the IAA in Frankfurt on Tuesday 11 September. Revealing a first 'preview image' of the car, Schreyer said: "Kia has given me the opportunity to shape its whole brand design and character. Seldom does a designer have such a clean sheet to work with. "We started this exciting journey with the Kia ex_cee'd cabrio concept at the Geneva Show back in March, and at Frankfurt I'm sure Kia will surprise the entire automotive world when people see our new sports coupe concept in the metal." The new concept - its name remains secret for now - has an imposing road presence and was designed by Schreyer at Kia's Frankfurt Design studio and was built in Europe. Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer said: "As we were given the assignment to develop themes for a compact hybrid sedan, we wanted a sporty hybrid, something that would actually be very, very desirable – not appliance like. Intuitively, my first thoughts were to focus on creating a cabin that was extremely lightweight, airy, and very modern. I explored lean, less conventional forms, which challenge traditional interior masses. This being a concept vehicle, I also incorporated the latest technologies, which became a driving point for the theme development. My initial inspirational imagery for the interior consisted of wind farms, futuristic aerospace vehicles, touch panel displays and modern furniture. The modern forms, construction methods, technologies and statements made by these products set the course for a futuristic and research oriented approach to this interior. The center console, door armrest, and overhead console have a floating feel to continue the theme of lightness and airiness. All of which incorporate touch panel switches in place of traditional switchgear. With such a slippery exterior design, I felt it appropriate to echo this aesthetic in the interior with very fluid forms, reinforcing the sportiness and athleticism of the vehicle. We wanted a continuous flow exterior to interior, so the hexagon motif that is used throughout the exterior is extended into the interior details. In 2010, Subaru started a viral marketing campaign using a 2001-2002 Kia Optima dressed up as the "2011 Mediocrity", in order to "promote" a generic mid-size car with nothing special about it. This generation differed further from the Hyundai Sonata donor vehicle than the previous model. Unlike the previous Optima though, this vehicle uses a global platform, unique to Kia, designated "MG". The car continues to be built in South Korea and shares its 2.4 litre inline-four engine , five-speed Sportmatic automatic or five-speed manual transmission with the Sonata. The Optima received a crash test rating of five stars from the NHTSA , [ 6 ] and four stars from EuroNCAP . [ 7 ] [ edit ] Update 2010 Kia Optima SX (US) The Optima was revised and updated in 2008, debuting at the New York International Auto Show (as a 2009 model year). This update features new front-end styling and tail lamps. The design of the updated Optima was penned under the guidance of Peter Schreyer , Kia's chief design officer, and also former chief designer for Audi and Volkswagen . In addition to the revised exterior, length is also slightly increased by roughly 70 millimetres (2.8 in) to approximate 4,800 millimetres (190 in) long. There is also a new engine and the interior has also been revised. [ 8 ] Main changes in the interior are a redesigned instrument cluster and a Sirius Satellite Radio /AM/FM/MP3/CD with an auxiliary jack. In certain markets, the option of satellite navigation is offered. The new Theta II 2.4 litre inline-four engine employs dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) and a variable intake system (VIS) to increase power to 131 kilowatts (176 hp) while returning improved fuel consumption over its predecessor. Torque is rated at 229 newton metres (169 ft·lbf) there is 2.0L for other markets middle east etc. a 2.0L 4cyl with 5 manual or 4 automatic gearbox with power 164 hp (122 kW) at 6200 rpm and 197 N·m (145 lb·ft) torque takes it from 0–100 km/h(0-60 mph) in 9.2sec for manual and 10.1 for auto with top speed up to 208 km/h (129 mph) a\outside the us . The 2.7 litre V6 has few changes to the previous model, though power is increased to 144 kilowatts (193 hp), and torque to 249 newton metres (184 ft·lbf) with standard 5speed automatic takes it from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 8.9sec with top speed up to 220 km/h (137 mph). A five-speed manual transmission is standard in the base model, and a five-speed automatic is included with mid- and high-end levels (or as an option in the base model). 2010 models see the addition of a Proximity Key with Push-Button Start and paddle shifters on SX models. It features a much sleeker, sportier profile designed by new Kia design chief Peter Schreyer , following the new design language featured on the Kia Forte , Kia Sorento , and upcoming Kia Sportage and Kia Cadenza — and using Kia's new corporate grille, known as the Tiger Nose , also designed by Schreyer. Lead designer of the TF in the team of Peter Schreyer and Miklos Kovacs was the Italian Davide Limongelli. As with its Hyundai Sonata sibling, the Optima's lineup has been replaced with a universal GDI 2.4 4-cylinder engine, either powered by a 6-speed automatic transmission with Eco dash display, or by a standard 6-speed manual transmission that is only standard on the LX model. Sales are slated to begin in Fall 2010. The new K5 came out on April 29, 2010 in the South Korean market. The new Optima retains its trim lines of the base LX, upscale EX, and sporty SX models. Standard equipment include a slew of advanced safety features such as ESC and ABS brakes, as well as Sirius Satellite Radio, cooled glove box, iPod connectivity, and handsfree Bluetooth phone operation. EX models receive Kia's new UVO infotainment system by Microsoft with integrated backup camera, and Proximity Key with Push-Button Start. SX models add a rear spoiler, metal pedals, black hybrid metal and carbon insert trim, paddle shifters, and illuminated scuff plates. A panoramic moonroof, heated front and rear seats, cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, and navigation system is also available. A Hybrid model and Turbo model has been announced, and is predicted to arrive in early 2011. In addition, a wagon version will hit European markets, and two-door coupe version may come to the U.S. at a later date. [ 9 ] The turbo model will have the same powertrain as the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T. The turbocharged model will have 274 hp (204 kW) and 269 lb·ft (365 N·m) of torque in the North American model. [ 10 ] The car is estimated to obtain 33mpg(US) on the highway. [ edit ] Hybrid version The 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid was unveiled at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show , and will be launched in the market in 2011. The Optima Hybrid uses the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid powertrain , combining a 2.4-liter engine with a six-speed automatic transmission, and a 30 kW electric motor and lightweight lithium polymer batteries to produce a full gasoline-electric hybrid with an estimated 37 miles per US gallon (6.4 L/100 km; 44 mpg -imp ) city and 39 miles per US gallon (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg -imp ) highway. RoadTestReports.co.uk takes counsel from the Trading Standards Institute Michael Annesley, Buckinghamshire Kia Magentis 2 Litre LS CDRi Auto 2007 I purchased this car new in March 2007, and for the first two years or so I was pleased with it. However, at 13000 miles a warning light indicating and engine fault appeared coupled with loss of power while driving at speed on a (fortunately almost deserted) dual carriageway. The local Kia dealer firstly diagnosed a faulty diagnostic centre, and when the fault persisted a faulty emission control valve. These faults were rectified under warranty About a year later at 22,000 miles an horrendous noise under the bonnet developed, and a different local dealer diagnosed a failed Air Conditioning compressor. This fault was repaired at a cost to me of £900.00. Both of these faults were potentially very dangerous,particularly the failed compressor as it could have lead to failure of the drive belt and engine failure at speed with possibly fatal results. I contacted Kia Customer Services as although the car was three months out of warranty it had, as stated covered only 22,000 miles. Kia Customer Services replied to my letter in an extremely patronising and unhelpful way, and were completely unconcerned as to the seriousness of the compressor fault. They stated that as I had failed to contact them before taking the car to a (their own authorised) repairer they could not consider any help with the cost of repair. I also test drove a Mazda 6 2.0 TS. There really was no comparison, the Mazda was in a totally different league altogether and although I think the Magentis is actually quite a nice car to drive all you think when you see it is ’cheap’, which when you realise what else is out there for relatively the same price - it’s not. Lots of space, comfortable and very well equipped. It drives reasonably well, however, there is some body roll, which does mark it down a little. All in all I’m very pleased with the car and can see me owning this for a number of years to come. Particularly when security demands the removal of any speck in the background that could be a disguised top-secret prototype and leaves you with less than a minute of footage. Also a little peculiar when the model is already in production (we went to see it being built) and in a showroom near you throughout Korea. In fairness, KIA’s purpose of our visit was not to make video tests of its new cars, but to familiarise us with its entire R&D operation. Which is extremely impressive, and includes a $45 million wind tunnel as well as a factory at Hwasung that employs 13,000 people and turns out 600,000 cars a year. And that’s just one of its factories. The new K5 Magentis is a ‘D’ sector car (like the Mondeo, Insignia and Passat), but moves the game on from previous Magentis. It’s striking to look at, attractive inside and manages the double whammy of being both powerful and eco friendly. 4,845mm long by 1,830mm wide by 1,455mm high, KIA actually pitches it against the Toyota Camry rather than cars like the Mondeo. The two engines Britain will get are a 2.0 litre petrol injected MPI, and its new, chain cam U2 twin turbo VGT that develops an unimpressive 115PS, but drives like a much more powerful car with exceptionally low emissions that KIA expects to get down to 125g/km by the time it goes on sale in the UK. It’s available in various levels of trim, with wheel and tyre sizes from 205/70 R15, through 205/65 R16 to 245/45R18. It will have LED Daytime running lights, optional Xenon high beam headlights, optional panoramic sunroof, optional ventilated seats, an electric parking brake and a rear view camera. It’s an extremely handsome car, with the same ‘new face’ of KIA as seen on the new Sorento and new Sportage (of which more elsewhere). That’s all for now. More as we get more information.
