Steve Ghosley Sees What All The Fuss Is About... Glamour has always been an attribute used by manufacturers to sell their cars, so it is not surprising that one would eventually attach this particular monicker to one of their models. Kia Motors have paired up with Glamour magazine, the biggest selling womens monthly in the UK and Europe, to create the co-branded Kia Picanto Glamour special edition we look at here. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Aimed at those style-conscious individuals who perceive themselves to be in need of a car that reflects their tastes, the Picanto Glamour is based on the 1.1-litre LX and features air-conditioning, alloy wheels, body-coloured bumpers, a sporty looking mesh grille and a MP3-compatible CD audio player for an all-in price of £6,995. Kia will also throw in free insurance for a year on cars purchased before the end of September 2005. The Picanto is a combination of light weight and slick engineering meaning that its a responsible citizen. The 65bhp 1.1-litre unit emits a creditable 124g/km of carbon dioxide. This makes it one of the cleanest petrol engined citycars it is possible to buy. The styling is pleasantly contemporary too, although the Picantos face appears to wear a permanently shocked expression. Designer Kang Lee aimed to give the car a distinctive look and although there are elements of the design that shout Toyota, that in itself is no bad thing. The front end features those big headlamps with multi-focus reflectors as well as a trapezoid front grille. The rear is dominated by a large curved glass screen and some very large light clusters. The chunky utility styling gives the Picanto a substantial look thats a welcome relief compared with some of the rather insubstantial looking rivals in its class. It certainly feels a good deal better screwed together than, say, a Daihatsu Charade, although those customers looking for a big car feel will doubtless shell out the extra for a Fiat Panda."as a shopping trolley for the glamorous, there is plenty of room for the fall-out from a trip to Sloane Street"As befits a car with a high roofline, front headroom is an impressive 1,003mm up front and 996mm in the rear which means that theres ample space for taller drivers. Front legroom is also very good thanks to the compact engines with 1,041mm up front and up to 872mm in the rear. Shoulder room is very good front and rear, although this is a car that you may not want to travel in five up. With 19 storage areas dotted about the cabin, Kia have done their homework when it comes to sheer utility, learning lessons from their huge selling Sedona and Carens MPV range. It would be unreasonable to expect a huge amount of luggage space given the cars urban remit, and the 157 litres of available room wont make the Picanto your first choice for a trip to IKEA, but as a shopping trolley for the glamorous, there is plenty of room for the fall-out from a trip to Sloane Street. Fold the seats flat and theres a reasonable 882 litres of space but youll struggle for length. The 60/40 split rear seat back offers a little extra carrying space if youre travelling with three on board. This Picanto is fitted with electric windows and mirrors with remote central locking for all four doors and the tailgate. Although 65bhp may not sound a whole hill of beans, its a fair amount for such a small car and is enough to give the 1.1-litre Picanto a modest turn of speed. Itll get to 60mph in 15.1 seconds and run on to a top speed of 96mph. While this may make the cut and thrust of the British motorway system something of a white knuckle ride, its perfectly adequate for city motoring and with its 35 litre fuel tank will manage up to 435 miles between refuels. Given the typically short journeys that many citycars undertake, the staff in your local petrol station are unlikely to be on first name terms with you. A five speed manual transmission is supplied as standard but if youre really serious about city driving you may well be tempted by the four-speed automatic option. Kia have developed a miniature fully independent suspension system that aims to deliver both zippy handling and a reasonable compliant ride and has been tuned to cope with typical poorly surfaced European roads. Based on a shortened Hyundai Getz chassis, the steering is fairly quick witted and the wheels are diddy 14-inch numbers fitted with tall 165/65 series rubber. Kia havent cut any corners when it comes to safety, the Picanto featuring not only anti lock brakes but load sensitive electronic brake force distribution as well that directs braking power to whichever tyre can best deploy it. ABS and EBD can only do so much if the brakes themselves arent up to the task, but rather unusually for this class of car, the Picanto features disc brakes all round. Its also equipped with steel side impact protection beams in the doors, reinforced rear bumpers, child locks on the rear pair of doors and five three-point seat belts. Twin airbags come as standard and side airbags can also be specified at extra cost. Security hasnt been ignored either, the Picanto being fitted with an engine immobiliser and remote releases for the tailgate and fuel filler cap. Theres also an optional keyless entry and anti theft alarm. Kia have started to change peoples perceptions of their products with the introduction of the more European-styled and well-engineered Picanto. Special editions like the Picanto Glamour linked to glossy magazines with guaranteed advertising will only serve to spread the word further. Some quick tips - its cheaper to buy an already registered car from the showroom than to have it delivered from the factory (nearly £1,000 cheaper) but ......the showroom. I got offered the free insurance but this was for factory cars only, and it worked out cheaper to get my own insurance, and a showroom car. I trained as a motor vehicle technician and worked for 15 years as a Class I HGV driver, so you may find it surprising that I like such a small car. The fact is that if you were properly trained to drive ( and few are ) in the first place you don't need a big engine to make good progress. I have the 1000cc GS which fortunately comes with a rev counter, quite useful if you want to make best use of the power available. ......slow at getting up speed, but if you use the gearbox correctly you can keep up with most drivers getting away from the lights. First gear is pretty low ( not a bad fault ) but second will take you from 15 to 40mph in no time at all. The gap to third gear is quite large, so you need to be doing almost 30 before you even consider using it. I get nearer 45 but most of the miles I do are commuting ten miles to work each day and ten miles back so it doesn't really get warmed up. On longer runs it is a bit better. Kia quotes this particular model at a combined rate of 55.4 mpg - which sounds about right to me; please excuse the following mathematrickery. I've done around 2200 miles on about 5 tanks of fuel. Since the Picanto has a 35 litre tank, that's as good as 5 x 8 gallons = 40 gallons over 2200 miles. Now, 2200/40 = 55mpg. Phew! That's exactly why it's been so kind on my pocket. I found an online deal with a dealer in Milton Keynes which meant the car was £5,300. It came with a three-year-warranty, free breakdown cover for three years and tax for the first year. So the more I thought about it the better sense it made. And I'm so pleased I made that decision. The car is fantastic. It is easy to drive (once you get used to the indicators being on the right rather than left), it ......(cd player, radio), it has power steering, front electric windows, and lots of storage spaces. It is also good for petrol consumption and takes you a long way each time you fill up. It isn't the speediest car in the world and can take a little while to accelerate. And it also doesn't have a very large boot. But it is a five-door, small car so that is not unreasonable. Great little car for running around the city, It is also good for travelling long distances from time to time but wouldn\'t buy the car if that was a daily habit. I wouldn't recommend more than 2 people travelling in the car for more than 15 minutes though because the back is extreamly cramped. The petrol consumption is brilliant and doesn't eat you out of pocket. The tyres need checking regularly as they do have a tendancy to 'deflate' as it were, ......to Devon I was very proud that my car managed to make the four hour car journey and that when we got there it was able to go up the hills, even if it did need some persuading. The GLAMOUR model that I purchased has a different look to the standard Picanto. The front grill especially looks alot more stylish and so did the silver dust caps ( before I had them pinched). I treated this car so gently and it broke down after 6 months (8,000) miles. The engine failed and needed a whole new and geerbox. Small engined as it may be the Kia has more than enough power to climb the hills round here, do a days work as a driving school car and return 38.9 mpg. At motorway speeds it is surprisingly civilized, not too noisy and keeping up with the other traffic. So far with just under 1000 miles I am more than pleased with the little car. BTW my other car is a BMW 525 auto and I positively enjoy ... Top Gear says the Picanto is a poor effort, and to buy the Fiat Panda instead. I say drive them both and you'll soon give the Panda up for ...
