A must for those families seeking as much car as possible for as little money as possible. Thanks to Kia Motors UK who provided the Kia Sportage for the Road Test Report. Contact Customer Services at Kia Motors UK on 0845 601 7521 Kia Sportage lease prices Kia Sportage new and nearly new Performance The car holds lots of promise with twin rear exhausts hinting at spirited performance. It has a spritely turn of speed, 40-70mph with kick down is excellent even up steep hills. At motorway speed it’s easy to drive and road noise is well suppressed. The cruise control is also handy on the motorway. The KIA has a small turning circle and disc brakes all round scrub speed off efficiently. Its’ auto gearbox has the ability to select 2nd for initial movement which is ideal for icy and snowy conditions. Ride & Handling The Sportage feels sure-footed on greasy wet city streets which inspires confidence. Once warm, the frugal diesel engine becomes more akin to a petrol engine making it feel more agile and sporty. There is limited body roll for a vehicle of this size. The car felt happy being both tickled around town and being hustled down country lanes. At times I forgot it was a diesel. Build Quality & Reliability There’s an excellent manufacturers’ 7 year warranty and 12 months RAC cover, a bonus, but you shouldn’t need it. The doors shut with a solid clunk, and the build felt close to the likes of BMW and Audi, a pleasant surprise at this cost. There’s good use of materials, i.e. leather, soft touch plastics and chrome door handles, which give an opulent feel. Safety & Security As you’d expect from a modern car there are plenty of airbags should the unthinkable happen. There are also 3 point rear seat belts, a full sized spare alloy, chunky easy to use controls, clearly laid out dials, all of which are within easy reach of driving position whether you’re tall short, fat or thin. The large rear view mirrors are excellent for reversing manoeuvres. Space & Practicality The cabin felt light and airy, even on a dark miserable night. There are cup holders in abundance and plenty of interior lights. The rear seats split 60/40 and recline, excellent for those stressed out executives or tired children. There is auxiliary, iPod, USB and 12V connectivity within the centre console for all modern gadgets. The boots opens either fully or partially just with the glass for those lighter less bulky items. A bumper load cover protects from those unsightly scratches, ideal for Labrador country walks (or similar sized dog) Ownership & Value The chunky exterior of this car doesn’t make it feel large or cumbersome from the drivers seat. After 2 hours driving in treacherous conditions I didn’t feel fatigued one bit. This car might not be at the top of your wish list, but it’s well worth serious consideration. It does everything confidently and competently. As an ex BMW employee I am very impressed with the KIA Sportage. Submitted: 18/11/2008 13:54:34 Performance The Sportage has an unusual characteristic in Auto mode , as it retains a feel of a large , executive 4x4 whilst actually being nowhere near as large or expensive. The car is designed to be driven as cruiser as any attempt to sprint to 60 from standstill will prove a tad frustrating. However there is plenty of low down torque from the 2.0 diesel engine should you need it. Ride & Handling The ride is soft and comfortable whilst the handling is actually quite sharp and precise. Again the Sportage is built for comfort and our car had the leather interior to enhance the feeling of well being. Build Quality & Reliability Really pleasantly surprised here! The Sportage had the feel of a much more expensive vehicle whilst obviously being much cheaper than it’s premium marque rivals. Reliability does not look to be an issue with the Sportage. Safety & Security What more can you say! Airbags everywhere and a substantial car to protect you should there be an accident! Space & Practicality Generously equipped for both rear and front passengers along with the driver. The increased height of the Sportage offers more room for everybody and the boot is easy to use and large enough for most families. Ownership & Value One to keep for a few years if you are going to buy. This way you would take advantage of the warranty and Kia’s reputation for rock solid reliability. This strategy may also protect you from any dips in depreciation on the more expensive models. Request Brochure Test Drive Best Deals This is not a car that Kia expected to build when it launched the current Sportage range early in 2005, but it is a car we were hoping they would get round to sooner or later. In our test of the original 2.0 XE we wondered if there might be a case for a front-wheel drive version which would provide more luggage space than the 4x4, while losing out only marginally in terms of on-road handling. The 2008 refreshment of the Sportage includes the introduction of just such a vehicle, though it hasn't worked out quite the way we'd expected. On reflection, it was overambitious to expect that Kia could have lowered the boot floor to take up space formerly occupied by a rear axle. That would have been a big, big job, entirely uneconomic even to spend time considering, so the floor remains where it is and the luggage volume remains as before at 667 litres (rear seats up) or 1887 litres (seats down). The point about the on-road handling was that, for a compact SUV, the Sportage was already extraordinary. The ride quality in particular was just amazing - probably the very best thing about the car - and there didn't seem to be any great need to divide the two-litre turbo diesel engine's 138bhp among all four wheels. For 2008, Kia has mildly revised the suspension, and although I haven't yet taken an FWD Sportage along roads of sufficient difficulty to see exactly what has been gained, I can certainly confirm that nothing has been lost. In normal driving, there is nothing to suggest that the front axle has any problem dealing with all the power on its own. Another reason for offering an alternative to four-wheel drive is the reduction in running costs. Since there is less weight and less friction, the 2WD Sportage should be faster and more economical than its 4x4 equivalent, and also have lower CO2 emissions. Instead, it's slower and thirstier, and emits quite a lot more of the world's most taxable gas. That's because the front-wheel drive Sportage is the only diesel in the range with automatic transmission, and this is more than enough to overcome any speed/fuel/CO2 benefits. It's 3.1 seconds slower to 62mph than the 4x4, it has an inferior combined economy figure to the tune of 4.5mpg, and the CO2 rating jumps from 187g/km to 210g/km. Admittedly, it's cheaper to buy, but only by £200, and that advantage will have fallen to zero by the time you make your fourth refuelling stop. Both models are in VED Band F, so there's no tax difference, but that's only because the 4x4 rather unfortunately misses dipping into Band E by just 2g/km. So, despite expectations, the 2WD Sportage will actually cost more to run than the 4x4. A 2WD manual would cost £1000 less, it would exceed 40mpg on the combined cycle and it would certainly fall at least into Band E, saving £40 a year on tax until March 2010 at the earliest, but unfortunately Kia doesn't build one of those. Not yet, anyway. It does, however, build a manual 2WD fitted with the two-litre petrol engine. This comes in two specifications, and the lower one costs £13,995, making it the cheapest Sportage by a full £1000. It has the same maximum power output as the diesel but is a lot quicker, and uses exactly as much fuel on the combined cycle. Still, even if the financial figures don't stack up in favour of a diesel 2WD owner, there remains a lot to be said for the automatic. The Sportage is a splendidly easy car to drive, particularly in town, and the auto transmission makes it even more so. The gearshifts are very smooth indeed, and as for the performance, who really needs to get from rest to 62mph in less than 15 seconds? If you buy a 2WD Sportage you can be sure that it was built in Europe, since another of the changes for 2008 is that production of all models sold here has been transferred from South Korea to the Zilina factory in Slovakia. From now on, all Sportages also feature a few styling tweaks, the suspension improvements mentioned earlier, and revised interiors which among things include more supportive seats. The Sportage range as a whole has three trim levels, but only two of them are available with the 2WD car. XE models have air-conditioning, remote central locking, alloy wheels and electric windows and mirrors, though the 2WD version is the only one not to have protective body mouldings, presumably because there's very little chance that anyone will take one off-road. The 2WD XS does have those mouldings, though, and it also gets climate control air-conditioning, cruise control, leather upholstery and various pieces of metallic-effect interior trim. For all this you pay an extra £1500 over the cost of an XE. If you're well-versed in Kia matters you'll be aware that there is another trim level above this called Titan, but it doesn't apply to the 2WD models. Auto Express Car Reviews Text: Sam Hardy / Photos: Nathan MorganNovember 2007 Rating: Demand for off-roaders is growing – but so are their price tags. With a top-spec Land Rover Freelander costing £34,000 and Ford’s forthcoming Kuga range starting at £20,000, where do you turn for a budget SUV?The answer is simple - Kia’s Sportage. Since its 2004 launch, the com-pact 4x4 and its sister car, the Hyundai Tucson, have built up a small, loyal UK following thanks to their affordability. Now, the Sportage has benefited from a host of updates – so Auto Express got behind the wheel to see how the budget SUV shapes up.At £17,695, our 2.0-litre diesel XS model costs the same as before – and with entry-level 2WD versions starting at less than £14,000, the range is even better value. The Sportage was never stylish, though, and this is something Kia has tried to address, introducing new headlights, a smoother front bumper and a fresh grille. The changes are welcome, although the tyres still appear rather undersized and the overhangs are heavy, so the Kia is awkward to look at.Inside, the seats are updated, with more cushioning up front, while the 60/40 split-folding rear bench is now mounted lower. Comfort is improved as a result, and although material quality isn’t as good as in the best European models, the car feels solidly put together, and is spacious. It’s also well equipped - all variants get six airbags and air-con, while our XS adds leather trim, plus climate and cruise control. A new flagship Titan model gets heated seats, tinted glass and an electric sunroof – although rather worryingly for a top-heavy off-roader, it’s the only version to be fitted with ESP stability control.Under the bonnet, the existing range of 2.0 and 2.7-litre V6 petrol engines and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel is carried over unchanged. But in a bid to improve the handling, the steering and suspension are revamped, while the brakes are now larger, too.Do all these changes work? Well, the Kia provides a comfortable rather than sporty driving experience. The steering is well weighted but vague, and body roll is reduced, although it’s still pronounced at high speed.Take things steady, though, and the suspension does a great job of soaking up bumps. Wind and engine noise is reduced as well, making the Sportage quite relaxing to drive. The engine is gutsier than the 12-second 0-60mph time suggests. In fact, with 305Nm of torque, it provides lots of overtaking punch, and returns around 40mpg, too. If only the six-speed box wasn’t so long winded – although an auto is now available for the diesel. With decent traction and ground clearance, the Sportage is also capable off-road. But the 4x4’s trump card is its warranty – Kia’s seven-year, 100,000-mile cover. Add that to the low price and you’ve got an SUV that doesn’t cost the earth to buy or run.Rival: Toyota RAV4 the RAV4 is brilliant to drive, with car-like handling on tarmac and decent off-road ability. Great build and rock-solid residuals also come as standard, so its popularity is no big surprise. Even with a long list of revisions, Kia’s Sportage is nowhere near as good as class-leading SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. But that’s not the point. The Sportage is so much cheaper than those models, it’s effectively in a class of its own. What’s more, it’s comfortable to drive, spacious and well equipped, plus it has an absolutely bulletproof warranty. It makes a great alternative to a regular family hatch, and brings 4x4 ownership within the reach of many buyers.
